You may already have an excellent tooth brushing routine down pat, but many Americans fall short on one or more of the basic principals of brushing your teeth most effectively. Read on to brush up on brushing!
Don’t… use a hard brush or brush with force. This can be damaging to tooth enamel and cause gum recession.
Do… use a soft-bristled brush and brush gently. A soft-bristled bush cleans just as thoroughly as any other brush and can give your gums a nice little massage while helping to remove plaque along the gum line if you brush properly.
Don’t… stick to just the teeth. Include the area around the teeth too.
Do… brush along the gum line gently at a 45-degree angle.
Don’t… use whitening toothpastes. Whitening pastes mostly just rely on abrasive ingredients to scrub surface stains and are too hard on enamel.
Do… use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Read on to see how to get the most of your fluoride toothpaste.
Don’t… rinse with water you brush. Rinsing with water just washes off all the good fluoride in your toothpaste.
Do… spit out the excess but then allow the toothpaste to remain on your teeth and give them a mini fluoride treatment.
Don’t… use an old worn-out toothbrush. A worn out brush is not going to be very effective at cleaning you teeth.
Do… replace your toothbrush about once every 3 months. You may also want to replace it after you have been sick
Don’t… rush when you brush. The average person only brushes for about 45 seconds, far short of the recommended 2 minutes (120 seconds)!
Do… learn to take your time and do a good through, gentle, two-minute brushing and it will easily become an established routine.
